Josephine is a French bistro located in Kenmore Square, one of Boston’s most iconic neighborhoods. The design process began with stripping away unnecessary layers added over time to the historic 1899 brick structure, revealing its original character.

Beyond essential kitchen updates, the space was carefully curated with both direct and subtle references to Paris and Boston. Some elements, like the replica of a Paris RER subway sign and the illuminated "Josephine" letter signage, establish a distinct identity for the restaurant. Other details create more nuanced connections: bar stools in Boston Red Sox red, wine shelving reminiscent of everyday Parisian bistros, and a digitally reinterpreted portrait of "Josephine," serving as a visual link between the restaurant’s two levels.

The image of 'Josephine' was pixelated by adjusting the size of the dots, creating a subtle visual effect. It was carefully positioned on the stairway so that it does not appear too direct to viewers. Can you see her face?
